Enrique Tarrio, the former Chairman of the Proud Boys, received a 22-year prison sentence on Tuesday for seditious conspiracy and leading a failed attempt to disrupt the transfer of power from Donald Trump to Joe Biden. District Judge Timothy Kelly delivered the longest sentence connected to the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack.

During the sentencing, Tarrio, dressed in an orange jumpsuit and slip-on sneakers, stood at a lectern in a crowded courtroom, appearing somber as the judge handed down the lengthy sentence. Last week, three other Proud Boys leaders were also found guilty of seditious conspiracy and sentenced.

Judge Kelly emphasized the importance of the peaceful transfer of power, stating, "It is kind of hard to put into words how important the peaceful transfer of power is.   Our nation was established as a trial in self-government by individuals, however it can't long persevere in the event that the manner in which we choose our chiefs is compromised with power and viciousness.." He described Tarrio as the primary organizer driven by revolutionary zeal and noted the absence of remorse.

Tarrio's lawyer, Nayib Hassan, expressed disagreement with the judge's decision and mentioned the possibility of appealing the verdict.

While Tarrio was arrested in Washington, DC, prior to the riot for burning a Black Lives Matter banner and bringing high-capacity rifle magazines into the city, Judge Kelly highlighted Tarrio's outsized influence on the events of that day, despite his absence from the Capitol during the attack.

Although the 22-year sentence is the longest for any defendant related to the January 6 incident, the Justice Department had sought a 33-year prison term for Tarrio. Judge Kelly consistently issued sentences below previous Justice Department requests for other Proud Boys members involved in the case. Ethan Nordean and Joseph Biggs received 18- and 17-year sentences, respectively, while Zachary Rehl was sentenced to 15 years, and Dominic Pezzola received a 10-year prison term after being acquitted of the seditious conspiracy charge.

Tarrio: ‘I am not a political zealot

Prior to his sentencing, Tarrio expressed remorse for the turmoil caused to law enforcement, legislators, and others during the events of January 6. He made a commitment to disassociate himself from political activities, groups, activism, or rallies.

"I have consistently strived to keep a higher moral norm, and I fizzled," Tarrio conceded. "I wrongly viewed myself as ethically unrivaled, and this preliminary has distinctly uncovered my blunder."

In front of the judge, Tarrio reflected on how he found himself in this position over the past year and a half. He mentioned that his candidate's loss on November 3, 2020, left him feeling personally aggrieved, exacerbated by media sources seemingly justifying his sentiments. However, he emphasized that he was not advocating violence or attempting to alter the election's outcome.

Prosecutor Conor Mulroe strongly criticized Tarrio, characterizing him as having a "damaging ability to manipulate others" and being the ringleader of a conspiracy that aimed at destabilizing the government.

Mulroe painted Tarrio as an individual who used political violence to elevate his own profile and influence. He described members like Tarrio as individuals who didn't resort to extreme measures but reveled in traveling from place to place and engaging in physical altercations with their adversaries.

Mulroe underscored the significance of the Proud Boys, led by Tarrio, in the events of January 6, asserting that they played a pivotal role in breaching the Capitol, closely following Tarrio's direction and planning.

Tarrio's attorney, Sabino Jauregui, vehemently contested any additional terrorism-related penalties, stressing that Tarrio had no intention of undermining or overthrowing the United States government.

"My client is not a terrorist," Jauregui declared. "He's a misguided patriot. He believed he was saving our country, not waging war against it."

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence showing that Tarrio played a role in establishing a command structure within the Proud Boys before January 6, outlining their actions at high-profile rallies.

Although absent from Washington, DC on January 6, Tarrio expressed support for the rioters online and maintained contact with his co-defendants at the scene, according to prosecutors.

Biggs and Nordean, who took leadership in Tarrio's absence, spearheaded the Capitol charge. The Proud Boys led the mob, breaching barriers, police lines, and breaking windows, ultimately prompting Congress to evacuate and temporarily halt the certification of the 2020 presidential election results.
